Chapter Sixteen

Bradley was pacing again in his room. He was sweating profusely as he waited anxiously for the man he had hired to get him his fix to return. His hands shook. What is taking the man so long? he wondered. He needed his fix!

He had met with Manuel and Jorge about his idea, and they had actually liked it. He laughed at how easy it was to play the two men. He’d show them. He’d show them all that Bradley Stephenson Reed was no idiot. He’d get the ransom money from his father and then he’d ditch the two mongrels. After losing the women and being found by his father’s henchmen, they didn’t deserve any reward.

He had it all worked out. His father would have the money wired to an offshore account that only he had the number to, and then he’d get rid of Jorge and Manuel for good. No one would care about two more scum-bucket bottom feeders disappearing in the jungle. Then Bradley Reed would set himself up in style somewhere and live happily on his Daddy’s money. No more talk about getting a job and being respectable. He’d do whatever he wanted whenever he wanted.

There was a knock at his door and he nearly sprinted over to it. Yanking it open, he saw the man that he had sent out hold up a small bag with white powder in it.

“‘Bout time you got back. What took you so long?” Bradley hissed at the man. He made to snatch the bag from the swarthy man’s hand but he held it out of Bradley’s reach.

“Money first.” He sneered at Bradley.

Bradley reached into his pocket and pulled out some bills and shoved them into the man’s hand. He had borrowed the money from Manuel, telling him that he needed some for food and clothes and that he would pay him back from his share of the ransom. Manuel had been only too happy to loan him the money. What a fool. He would pay him back all right, but not the way the man expected.

He took the small bag from the man and slammed the door. He rushed over to the small table where he had already laid out his mirror and a card. He poured out a small amount of the powder and began to draw it into lines across the mirror. When he was satisfied with each line, he rolled up a dollar bill, leaned over, placed the rolled bill to his nose, and snorted the white powder up his nostril. He felt the rush almost immediately.

After he snorted a second line he leaned back in his chair and let the euphoria take him over. Now he could think. He couldn’t wait to show them all how smart he really was. He’d make them all pay, his father for disowning him, Manuel and Jorge for using him, and even sweet little Kiera, who thought that he would be her meal ticket out of her miserable life.
